Dream Recording Possible
A researcher from UCLA has come out and said that he plans to interpret and record people’s dreams electronically.

In the journal Nature, a group of scientists have said that they have devised and created a method which is able to record higher level brain activity, also known as “the dream state”. Their stated aim is not to intrude on what people dream, but more to understand why people dream and how they do it.
Since the earliest of days, people in general have been captivated by dreams and their potential meaning. Even in Ancient Egypt, people thought that dreams were messages sent directly from God himself and subsequently acted on these “messages”.
Analysis of dreams has recently been used by psychologists as a way of understanding the intricate workings of the unconscious mind. Up until now, the only way dreams could be interpreted were to ask the subject what they dreamt about once they woke up.
The ultimate objective of this project is to create a system which can help psychologists to validate people’s memory of their dreams with an actual electronic version of the activity in their brain at that time.
Dr Moran Cerf, the lead scientist in this project, made his brave claim on the back of a study which he believes to suggest that individual brain cell activity is associated with specific objects and ideas.
This study involved showing participants different images, upon which the scientists built up a database of which neurons were active for each image the participants viewed. Images included various celebrities and world famous landmarks.
However, Dr Cerf admitted that there was a long way to go before these results can be built upon and developed into an actual “dream catcher”.
The next stage in the development is to actively monitor the brain activity of people while they are asleep. The scientists would only be in a position to match up neuron activity with images/ideas that already exists on their database, although this database could grow by monitoring brain activity when watching a film or sporting event.
The potential for this is significant, although many have admitted that it is a long way from being a feasible reality. One suggested future uses for such advances in technology could be that instead of writing a word document, you could think of the words and they would appear on the screen!
Imagine that!
