The Korean Conflict – Part 2?

Could a new Korean War break out? The South Korean defense minister said that the south is ready to attack the north with air strikes. This would be their main response in case the north decided to attack again. It’s the most heated words since the start of the conflict and it shows that the south will not be walked on. Kim Kwan-jin said during his confirmation hearing that if attacked “We will definitely air raid North Korea.” This has both the United States and China worried that both sides will regress and start the conflict again. Kim was appointed last week in response to the North Korean’s latest attack. Immediately after the attack, the South Korea’s president called for immediate retaliation against the north.

His latest comments show that the South Koreans are ready to rekindle the conflict between the two countries. He was quoted as saying that “If the North commits any additional provocations against the South, we will make sure that it pays a dear price without fail.” The South Korean military also just finished a joint military drill with the United States on Tuesday. Many analysts believed that the drill was held to show the power and the alliance between the two countries. The drills ended on Tuesday peacefully. However, the north felt like the south was showing direct provocation by doing the drills with the US. The drills were scheduled to happen before the attack by the north.

The latest military intelligence by the South Korean government shows that another attack by the north is “highly probable”. With all of this said, the south began preparations to being a new round of live-fire drills to show their strength to the north. This move will probably cause the situation in the peninsula to raise to a critical level. The North Korean government has warned that an “all-out war” is possible at anytime. This road will only lead us to another Korean Conflict in which the United States and China will be involved.

The Chinese government has been working behind the scenes to try to lower the tension between the two countries and create peace on the peninsula. The United States immediately condemned the attack by the North Koreans and any response by the South Koreans. With the world watching, the Koreans must learn to get together. If not, it will be another long conflict between both sides. That would also draw the US and China back into it and take the whole world back to the 1950′s.
