Whitney Houston’s Grammy Salute. Was it enough?

While the world continues to mourn the death of yet another superstar pop diva, Whitney Houston, there remains a cloud over the details surrounding her death.

It was first erroneously reported that she was found unconscious in her Beverly Hills Hotel Room by singer/songwriter “Ray J,” of “For the Love of Ray J” fame, when in fact she was actually found by her bodyguard, Ray.

Nevertheless, the two were very close, and were even romantically linked a couple of years ago. In response to a question from the media, he stated “You know, they blow this thing out of proportion. I mean, that’s my friend. I’ve been knowing her for years and years and years, and she’s a friend of the family. I have a lot of love for her and I have a lot of respect for her.”

At last night’s Grammy Awards, Jennifer Hudson gave a stirring and moving tribute, but some people feel as if the awards show didn’t do enough to honor the late singer.

Grammy executive producer, Ken Ehrlich, said in a statement, “It’s too fresh in everyone’s memory to do more at this time, but we would be remiss if we didn’t recognize Whitney’s remarkable contribution to music fans in general, and in particular her close ties with the Grammy telecast and her Grammy wins and nominations over the years.”

Given the short notice and the suspicion around her death, it’s hard to blame the show’s producers.  As Ken stated, we should focus on her contributions to music over the past decades, and celebrate the life and legacy of one of our greatest vocalists.
